Medical Daith Piercing

What is it?

We are stimulating the Auricular branch of the Vagus Nerve which governs our Parasympathetic Nervous System, our rest, digest & healing system. With issues such as chronic stress & anxiety, headaches & migraines and other medical conditions the body often gets stuck over in our Sympathetic Nervous System, our fight, flight or freeze and therefore the Vagus Nerve 'goes to sleep'. When your Parasympathetic Nervous System is healthy, healing can occur and this allows your body to respond to stress and stressful situations better. Marianne will use her acupuncture skills to wake up the Vagus Nerve, this allows a more accurate location for the actual piercing.

Conditions treated

Some of the clients that I have treated have had relief from their symptoms associated with Migraines, Headaches, Anxiety & Depression, ADHD, PTSD, Fibromyalgia & Chronic fatigue syndrome, Menopausal issues, Poor disturbed sleep, Dysphagia, Vertigo, IBS and other Neurological conditions.

Cosmetic piercing versus Medical piercing - what's the difference?

The difference between a Medical Daith Piercing and a Cosmetic Piercing is that a Medical Piercing is carried out by a therapist with Anatomy & Physiology knowledge, usually one who has an Acupuncture background and is insured to carry out the procedure. A detailed case history is taken during the consultation and full list of medications to ensure there are no contraindications present. Client details are recorded on a secure software system so we can keep data and refer back to individuals where necessary and importantly track the effects. The most important difference is that a Medical Daith Piercer will get the piercing as close to the Auricular branch of the Vagus Nerve as suitable for the client, thus achieving greater potential outcomes.

Aftercare & how long is the healing process?

You will leave your appointment with written aftercare instructions as well as a bottle of lavender based healing oil (ingredients: sunflower oil, lavender, vitamin E, tee-tree oil and niaouli) plus a Neilmed saline spray. If you have been fitted with a circular barbell (horseshoe) you will also be given two spare balls for your jewellery. I am passionate about you having the smoothest healing journey as possible. Some people heal very quickly within 2-3 months, most take 10-12 months and it is recommend that you not change your jewellery out until the piercing is fully healed. It can be a challenging piercing to heal because the Daith is the dampest darkest part of the ear so aftercare instructions need to be followed.

Results & is it painful?

Firstly lets talk about the pain! I am not a skin piercer I only pierce the Daith to help people with their medical conditions, I have lots of experience and the way I carry out the piercing I try to create as little trauma to the ear as possible, I use cannula needles and most people do not find the actual piercing itself painful. It is a tricky part of the ear to thread jewellery through, so there is some tugging and pulling for a few seconds, this is usually the most uncomfortable part. Don't worry I can use numbing cream if you are worried. So will it work? Most of our clients report an improvement in symptoms, for others, sadly it does not help. I often see clients who have had a piercing done in a piercing studio and want it re-done to get closer to the Vagus Nerve and hopefully have better outcomes. During your face-to-face consultation it will be decided if you are having one side pierced or both sides. If you are having both sides pierced they do not have to be done at the same appointment but Marianne can be discussed during your consultation process
